It’s almost moving day! The day you’ve been waiting for. You’ve created checklists, organized your possessions and doubled taped your boxes. You’ve thoroughly labeled each box and have picked your moving company. You are ready!

But don’t get ahead of yourself … The moving process is exciting, but also exhausting. Especially if you don’t plan ahead. You’ll want the day to go as smoothly as possible so here are a few ideas that will help keep you calm and organized once the big day is here.

1. Have extra packing supplies. Even after creating lists and packing everything you can think of, there could always be a few items we forget or haven’t packed yet. Keep a few empty boxes and extra tape, newspaper or bubble wrap on hand to be prepared for those loose or forgotten items. Even if a box breaks, but you’ll have your spares handy to fix the situation and keep the day moving.

2. Coordinate deliveries. Whether this is your first move or you are downsizing, there always seems to be some additional deliveries to go with your new home (e.g., furniture, appliances, etc). Coordinate the deliveries to occur on your moving day. This way the delivery people can bring your items directly into your new place and you’ll have it ready for you when the big day is over.

3. Have important contact information ready. You’ll want to keep a list of all parties involved with your move, e.g., parents, children, landlord or apartment complex manager. If anything goes wrong or gets delayed, you will have phone numbers ready to go to get the day back on track.

4. Have snacks and bottled water. It’s not fun when we get “hangry,” especially during moving day… Pack a few energy bars and plenty of water to keep you hydrated and full while doing any physical activity.

5. Pack a box for your first night. It’s a long day of thinking, organizing and physical activity. The last thing on your mind is unpacking the first night. Pack a box that includes your pj’s, nighttime toiletries, laptop, pillow, blanket, morning toiletries and clothes for the next day. This way you’re ready to “hit the sack” as soon as the big day is over.

6. Have cash or checks ready to go. If you’re using a moving company or other help, you’ll want to tip them or reward them for their hard work. You can buy them food, beer or give them money, but this way it’s out and ready. Also, having a checkbook on hand is always a good idea in case any unforeseen costs interrupt your moving day. Better to be safe than sorry.

7. Get renters insurance. A Renters policy is a package policy that includes property insurance covering damage to your belongings, liability insurance covering certain legal claims against you as the tenant, and limited coverage for medical expenses of guests who are injured on your property. Protect what’s essential. For just a few cents a day you can have peace of mind and ensure that your belongings are covered 100%.

Yes, moving can be stressful, but don’t let the stress overshadow your excitement.  A new place is always exciting and having the moving day run smoothly is even better. If you have any questions about moving or renters insurance contact a Bankers agent today! We’re here to help.
