Earthquake Simulator Tests New Technology on California Buildings #riskymonday

13 powerful earthquakes have already shaken cities around the globe this month, reiterating the importance of the ongoing work being done to build structures that can withstand earthquakes and keep citizens in high-risk areas safer than in years past.

Last week, researchers and engineers tested a new technology in San Diego called base isolators. The test was conducted on a simulated building sitting on giant hydraulics that imitated the effects and motions of an earthquake. The building contained features like elevators and operating rooms to see how they fared with the technology in place. Similar seismic safety precautions are being put in place on the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, the goal being to keep the structures functional after a potential quake hits. Essentially, base isolators allow structures to sway with a quake to avoid catastrophic damage.

The weather is warming up and summer is drawing closer, bringing cookouts and other sunny get-togethers back as well. Homeowners with patio decks are prepping for hosting duties, and this means cleaning and restoring decks after the battering they take during the winter months.

Some decks are worse off than others, of course, and no one wants children or guests stepping on protruding nails or tripping on warped pieces of wood. But fear not—sometimes even decks that look beyond repair can be brought back to life with a bit of elbow grease.

Home improvement expert Ron Hazelton has some tips on how to clean up a downtrodden deck and get it back to working condition.

The Science of Spring Cleaning #riskymonday

Spring has arrived, and chances are the winter has left your home with plenty of cleaning to do.

But one thing most people don’t think about is what happens to the air quality in your home once you start all the vacuuming, dusting, and spraying. Chemical fumes and mold spores abound in the home, and cleaning often stirs these hazards up, diminishing the air quality in your home. Symptoms often associated with allergies may be as much to do with the air in your home as the air outside.

Dr. Bahrainwala and Dr. Morbach have some tips on how to clean effectively and precautions to take to make sure spring cleaning doesn’t lead to spring sneezing.

Do You Know Your Flood Risk?

National Flood Safety Awareness Week is all about getting informed on the dangers flooding poses to your home and your family. But how do you know how great the risk of flooding is in your area specifically?

To determine a town or community’s flood risk, FEMA conducts its own Flood Insurance Study, which gathers statistics about all the factors that can put you at risk. River flow, storm tides, rainfall, and topographical surveys are all used to create flood hazard maps for your community.

Preparation is always the best defense against natural disasters, so check out FloodSmart.gov for a map of your area and read up on the website to understand what it means for you and your home so you can make informed decisions about flood protection.

Don’t let floodwaters catch you off guard. Get in touch today and let Bankers protect you from flooding and other risks.
